History
Scoil Mhuire is a thriving girls primary school in the leafy suburb of Sandymount. It is situated close to the seafront, Sandymount Village and is well served by bus routes and the DART.
There has been a school here on this campus since 1861. It was one of the first houses of the Religious Sisters of Charity founded by Mary Aikenhead, and the Sisters continue as the Trustees of the school. Scoil Mhuire was handed over to the Archdiocese of Dublin and lay principalship in 1993.
Today, Scoil Mhuire is an all girls primary school catering for girls from 4-12 years of age.The present school building was built in 1974 and was expanded in 2015 when four additional classrooms and two learning support rooms were built. An Autistic Spectrum Disoder unit was established in 2021.
Our facilities include a huge green area where children can play at break time and train for sport with ease. When the school was handed over to the Archdiocese of Dublin in 1993, an additional tract of land was donated to the school by the Religious Sisters of Charity. This has allowed us to build a sizable extension without losing much of our green space. We also have a license from the convent to use an adjoining field for sport. Such land in Dublin 4 is a valuable asset indeed and we are deeply grateful to the Congregation of the Religious Sisters of Charity for such generosity.
Scoil Mhuire is run under the auspices of the Department of Education and Skills (DES) and is funded by same. Teachers, while employed by the Board of Management, are paid by the DES. A Capitation grant is paid to cover the cost of running the school, but as with most schools this and other grants do not adequately cover the needs of a school in the 21st Century.
Scoil Mhuire has forged strong links with the Parish of Star of the Sea, Sandymount and has been well served by its priests over many years.
We have also sought to establish good links with the local community groups, especially Sports. We work closely with Clannagael Fontenoy GAA Club and Railway Union, for example.
Scoil Mhuire has also engaged in a number of Erasmus projects with schools throughout Europe.
